As amazing as live Christmas trees smell, the upkeep can be a lot. There’s regular watering, pine needles to sweep and tree disposal to figure out. Plus, live trees can be a health risk for pets and people with allergies. Enter artificial trees. These don’t require any maintenance, and you can set them up as early as you want in the holiday season without worrying about needles turning brown. In the last couple of years, the world of artificial trees has exploded with more manufacturers and brands that solely design faux Christmas trees. You can find an artificial version of dozens of popular live trees — from Douglas fir to blue spruce — as well as customized trees with various branch designs, snow effects and high-tech lighting. We’ve rounded up the best artificial trees for every style, size and budget. Take a look below and find your perfect Christmas tree.
Artificial Christmas Tree Terms to Know
- Hooked: Trees with hooked branches must be assembled with every branch featuring a hook that fits into a hole in the tree trunk. These are cheaper than hinged trees and require keeping track of the various tree branch sizes to correctly put the tree together.
- Hinged: Trees with hinged branches are already attached to the tree trunk and don’t require individual branch assembly. These branches just fold out for faster setup. But, unlike, hooked systems, the tree itself will be larger to break down and store.
- Flocked: Trees with a frosted snow-like appearance. These branches feature a powder coating that mimics freshly fallen snow.
- Downswept: Trees with branches that curve downward. Downswept trees are often more expensive but feature a more realistic branch pattern.
- Pre-lit: A tree with branches already strung in lights. Some prelit trees are even outfitted with color options so you can change from white to multicolor with a simple touch of a button.
- LED: Pre-lit trees with LED light bulbs. These are very, very bright and great for window displays, but they don’t necessarily have that warm, cozy candle-lit vibe.
Best Fraser Fir Christmas Tree
Oh, the Fraser fir. This show-stopping tree is likely what you imagine when you think of classic Christmas trees; they're known for their needles that look almost silvery-blue, and they have thick branches and a fluffy, full look to them. Our favorite option from Balsalm Hill comes pre-lit with lights that resemble warm candlelight rather than bright LEDs, and it comes in three sizes as well.
Best Noble Fir Christmas Tree
Noble Firs are similar to Frasers with their needles that look silver, green and blue; but they also have upswept branches. This one comes in a few sizes and comes pre-lit with either white or multi-colored LED lights. And if you're in shock by $1K+ for a fake tree, remember these babies will last for years and years and years. If you compare that to spending $100 for a live tree at the hardware store every year, it's a relatively good value.
Best Douglas Fir Christmas Tree
Why are Douglas fir trees so popular? It's kind of the MVP of Christmas trees — even in artificial form. It's thick and fluffy, and the dynamic, downswept branch pattern creates little pockets perfect for displaying ornaments. Wayfair has a great selection of artificial Douglas fir trees and this prelit tree (in both six and seven feet) has dozens and dozens of glowing 5-star reviews. And it's on sale right now!
Best Silvertip Fir Christmas Tree
Plush isn't everyone's style. For something more rustic, this silvertip fir from Terrain is the epitome of tree goals. It's perfect for a Scandinavian-style Christmas or a whimsical fairytale vibe; and this one from Anthropologie is a pre-lit, beautiful option.
Best Spruce Christmas Tree
Firs aren't the only popular artificial trees. You can also find tons of spruce varieties in faux form and our favorite is the blue spruce. It gets its name from the distinct, dark green, almost peacock-blue color, and nobody replicates that better than Balsam Hill. BH has become synonymous with artificial trees and you can shop the new Balsam Hill collection on Amazon — complete with free, two-day shipping for Prime members!
Best Pine Christmas Tree
For a country Christmas theme, an artificial pine tree is the way to go. Pine is also the most popular tree for pre-cut live options from hardware stores and tree lots. So, if you're used to this type of tree, we recommend this faux Carolina Pine from Amazon. It even comes with pine cones like a real tree!
Best White Christmas Tree
White Christmas trees can fit a number of decor styles: Use brightly colored balls for a Whoville-inspired look, silver and blue for a retro feel or delicate gold ribbon for an upscale feel. This Winchester White Pine tree from West Elm is gorgeous however you decorate it.
Best Flocked Christmas Tree
Another great perk to having an artificial tree is flocking, or the look of snowy tree branches. When done right, flocking looks like a magical winter wonderland, but oftentimes, cheap flocking just looks like sad spray paint. Wayfair has several name-brand artificial trees with realistic flocking, and we love this snowy, white spruce.
Best Budget Christmas Tree
"Designer," top-of-the-line artificial trees are more of an investment, but if you're looking for a cheap artificial Christmas tree that's more in line with the budget that you'd typically spend on a live tree, head over to Walmart. Walmart has some great options under $200. We even spotted this six-foot Douglas fir for under $150!
Best Narrow Christmas Tree
If you're short on square footage, you can still get the tree height you want without sacrificing floor space with a narrow tree. Sometimes called a slim artificial tree, these options come in the same tree styles and lighting options but they feature a super-slender profile. Amazon has a solid selection of narrow Christmas trees, and we really like this Kingswood fir. It's slim, but it still comes with a lot of texture and plush branches.
Best Easy-to-Store Christmas Tree
Typically, artificial Christmas trees are made in two styles: hinged or hooked. Both have pros and cons as far as setup goes, and both require a decent amount of space for storage. However, there's a new type of artificial tree in town that saves way more space than hooked or hinged, and we're pretty sure it uses Santa magic. West Elm is selling a pop-up tree. Yes, really. The whole tree collapses into one skinny circle that you can slide into a teeny, tiny nook in the closet or throw into a storage bin with ornaments — genius. This is such a great option for small spaces and apartments.
Best Twig Christmas Tree
You don't have to go green. Twig trees create a chic, modern aesthetic, and artificial twig trees are much more sustainable than buying a live one each year. We're obsessed with these prelit twig trees from Pottery Barn. They look gorgeous clustered together in varying heights.
Best Birch Christmas Tree
For the ultimate twig tree, however, you've gotta go birch. The artificial birch trees from Pottery Barn are deceptively realistic, right down to the wood bark patterns on the tree trunk.
Best Mini Christmas Tree
If you're shopping for a tabletop artificial tree or a Christmas tree for a small space, Target has a huge selection of mini artificial trees. This three-foot spruce checks all the boxes for style, functionality and price at just $20!
Best Tinsel Christmas Tree
For all the vintage fans, nothing says retro Christmas like a metallic tinsel tree. True vintage tinsel trees in good condition are expensive because people know exactly what they have on their hands, but Williams Sonoma has a beautiful silver tinsel tree that totally looks like it's from the early 60s.
Best Black Tree
Whether you're shopping for a tree you can decorate multiple different ways from Halloween through New Year's Eve or love decorating for the holidays with an unexpected color palette, black trees are trending big time. We absolutely love this black tinsel tree from West Elm. Its subtle shimmer would be perfect throughout the holidays, but especially for a New Year's Eve party.
