Ty Pennington’s 'Battle on the Beach' Team Built a 'Willy Wonka' Bed

Fans had some thoughts.

Season 3 of HGTV’s Battle on the Beach has come to a close, and there's a new champion in town: mentor Ty Pennington and designers Ashley Basnight and Steve Lewis. After losing Season 1 and 2 to Taniya Nayak (Build It Forward) and Alison Victoria (Windy City Rehab), Ty finally led his team to victory — as in added the most value to a once run-down beach home while sticking to a strict budget and tight timeline.

The renovated home is full of aged textures, intricate details, coastal furnishings and quirky elements — including an interesting (genius?) design detail in the guest suite. Instead of bunk beds, Ashley came up with the idea of a "mega bed," which Team Ty created by combining two queen beds foot-to-foot with matching antique, carved wood headboards on either end.

“One of the biggest challenges is getting as many people as you can into a guest room,” said Ty. “You need heads in beds.’”

Judges Sarah and Bryan Baeumler, hosts of Renovation Island, had mixed reviews:

“I don’t hate it because if you’ve got a bunch of kids, you can just line them up there and lay ‘em down like sausages,” said Bryan.

“I don’t know what somebody expecting this room to be for four adults [would say],” said Sarah.

While HGTV fans sympathized with the judges’ thoughts, they couldn't help but notice the bed looked eerily similar to another iconic sleeping space ...

Yep, Team Ty's megabed is reminiscent of the one Charlie's grandparents share in the movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

“LOL Grandpa Joe would’ve loved that beach house 😂😂😂,” commented one Instagram user.

“I KNEW I’d seen that bed setup before!” wrote another.

Is it a coincidence Team Ty's home — with their "twin king" bed contraption — came out on top? We think not.
